You need to find a balance between the calories that you consume when you eat and the calories you burn throughout the day. Eat 3,500 calories more than you burn, you gain one pound. Burn 3,500 calories more than you eat, you lose one pound. A combination of eating less and being more active that averages a reduction of 500 calories per day will result in a loss of one pound per week.
